Spring has always been a special time for my family.

It’s no longer the rush of the new year, nor is it the excitement of the summer - but rather something a bit softer - the days hold anticipation of things to come. The days stretch a little longer, the air begins to warm, and curiosity begins to wake.

My own children start to notice things they hadn’t before - from the bugs on the sidewalk, a tree beginning to bud, to the wildflowers blooming. Their questions begin and lead to another question, and yet still another.

This is often where the best learning begins - not with lesson plans, but with wonder.

This month we encourage families to lean into the curiosity- not by doing or adding more (of course we always think our classes only aid this endeavor), but by simply making space for questions.

This Month’s Theme

Curiosity Is a Skill

A few ways to nurture curiosity this month:

Ask open ended questions

  • “What do you think is happening here?”

  • “Why do you think that works?”

Follow their interests

  • If they love animals, explore habitats

  • If they love stories, talk about characters and choices

One of the most valuable skills children can develop isn’t memorization - although helpful, the hope would be that even memorization leads to what we consider one of the most valuable skills - curiosity.

Curious learners tend to:

  • Ask thoughtful questions

  • Make connections between ideas

  • Stay engaged longer

  • Think creatively about problems

The good news? Curiosity can grow when children are given time, conversation, and a little room to explore.

Allow room for Wondering

Sometimes the best response to a question is simply:

“That’s interesting… what do you think?“

Learning doesn’t always have to move quickly to be meaningful.

Big Reminder: Book Clubs 50% Off

Stories are powerful on their own.

They don’t need a book club. Yet, something special happens when students explore stories together.

Our small-group book clubs give learners the chance to

  • Connect with other readers

  • Participate in guided discussions

  • Build confidence and comprehension

  • Explore engaging books in a supportive space

These groups are intentionally small so every student has the chance to share ideas and be heard.

Use the code: BOOKCLUBS50 at checkout to receive 50% off one book club per family.

Valid through April 30

Still Available: Free Classes

Many of our instructors are still offering one completely free class. There’s no pitch at the end to continue to take classes with us, we simply want a chance to learn together and show you what we are all about.

Last week our Twist + Discover Tornado Science class had SO much fun together. We learned, asked questions, created our own tornado, and discussed tornado safety - we also laughed together and very much enjoyed our time. You still have time to sign up for any of our others available - Unraveling DNA - Build your Own Double Helix is tomorrow with Ms. Lizi!

Our free classes are a simple way to

  • Meet our teachers

  • Experience the Wild and Unstructured learning environment

  • Try something new without pressure

Each class includes a unique code that makes the session free - spots are limited.

If you have been curious about trying WAUL, this is the perfect opportunity!

What’s coming up at WAUL:

A Small Reflection

You might gently consider:

What questions has your child asked recently that surprised you?

When do they seem most engaged with learning?

What happens when curiosity is given time to grow?

Sometimes the most meaningful learning begins with a simple moment of wonder.

With care,
